The Opportunity

Make It Mariko is seeking a dynamic and creative Marketing Manager or Agency to lead the promotion and storytelling of a new weekly event activation in San Francisco’s Mint Plaza (where we launched UNDISCOVERED SF in 2017!). This will be a weekly event series (aiming for Fridays from 5-9pm) featuring live music & DJs to help increase sales for local restaurants & businesses.

Event Goals:
  • Create a fun, engaging, and FREE all ages event to activate Mint Plaza on a regular basis.
  • Increase traffic to Mint Plaza to get more business and patrons to the local restaurants.
  • Support local artists & creatives
  • Invest in infrastructure that can help Mint Plaza continue to be utilized on a regular basis even after the event season ends.

This role is perfect for someone passionate about events, social media, community building, and the Bay Area’s vibrant culture. The Marketing Manager will play a pivotal role in growing a new event series, engaging with audiences, and ensuring our weekly events are successfully and well attended.

The ideal candidate or agency would be able to take on the full scope of work, but we’re open to folks submitting a proposal for just part of the work.

We’re looking for folks that can respond to marketing needs quickly, who feel excited about coming up with and developing new ideas, and take command of the role to make it their own, while still staying true to Make It Mariko values, mission, and guidelines and expectations we’ll set forth together. In essence: this is a role where you take the ball, and you run with it.

Scope of Work:

Duties include but are not limited to:

Social Media Management
  • Create and manage a dedicated Instagram account for the event, ensuring a consistent, visually engaging, and brand-aligned presence.
  • Develop a content calendar and post regularly to highlight upcoming events, vendors, performers, and behind-the-scenes moments.
  • Craft engaging captions, utilize trending hashtags, and monitor engagement to grow the account and build a loyal community.
  • Respond to comments and direct messages to foster audience interaction and maintain a positive brand image.
Vendor & Performer Marketing
  • Collaborate with our Event Manager, Music Curator, vendors, performers, and other partners to create promotional assets, including posts, stories, and reels, to amplify their participation in the event.
  • Coordinate and ensure vendors and performers cross-promote the event on their own channels.
Website Design & Management
  • Design, build, and launch a simple, one-page website to promote the event
  • Maintain the site by regularly updating event schedules, featured vendors, performers, and media content.
  • Ensure the website is optimized for mobile and SEO to drive organic traffic.
  • Integrate free RSVP signup functionality to build email list for MIM
Content Creation & Event Promotion
  • Work with videographers and photographers to capture high-quality content at each event.
  • Oversee the editing process to produce reels, highlight videos, and professional photos for promotional use.
  • Build a content library to maintain a steady flow of fresh and engaging material for marketing.
  • Collaborate with the broader event team to brainstorm new marketing strategies to increase attendance and buzz around the event.
  • Engage local influencers and community leaders to support and promote the weekly activation.
Press & Media Outreach
  • Develop a press pitching strategy to secure media features in local and regional publications.
  • Write and distribute press releases, coordinate interviews, and build relationships with media outlets to maximize visibility.
  • Maintain a press kit with updated event details, high-quality visuals, and key talking points.
Analytics & Reporting
  • Track and analyze social media growth, engagement, and campaign success to inform future marketing efforts.
  • Provide weekly updates to the team on the event’s marketing performance, press coverage, and areas for improvement.
Meetings:
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings starting January 2025 (initial meetings MUST be in person at our new studio in SoMa on either Tuesdays or Thursdays)
  • Weekly check-ins once the event series begins.

What We’re Looking For:

  • 3-5 years of experience in marketing, social media management, or public relations with experience in event marketing
  • Proficiency in Instagram and Mailchimp and has experience growing accounts from scratch.
  • Strong copywriting skills, especially for social media and press releases.
  • Experience working with photographers, videographers, and designers to create high-quality content.
  • Knowledge of the San Francisco Bay Area community, culture, and event landscape
  • Comfortable with press pitching and building relationships with media contacts.
  • A self-starter who thrives in fast-paced environments and has excellent organizational skills.
  • Bonus: Experience with influencer outreach, email marketing, or other digital platforms.

Additional Details

Hours: Part Time Contract (1099 position)

Location: San Francisco, CA

  • Most of the work will be done remotely, but we encourage our team to co-work with us from our San Francisco office – Studio Mariko, 447 Minna St at least 1-2x a week. MIM team typically works in the office on Tuesdays & Thursdays.
  • Some onsite work will be needed to take footage at the venue in SoMa or to manage videographers onsite.
